The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is located off Wisconsins peninsula in Lake Superior (photo right). The lakeshore comprises beaches, cliffs, water, and 21 islands. Madeline Island is the only one of the Apostle Islands not included in the national lakeshore, although a portion of the island is protected as Big Bay State Park. The island's accessibility by ferry or ice road, along with the shops, restaurants and other commercial establishments of the island town of La Pointe, make it popular with visitors to the national lakeshore.
Located at the gateway to the Apostle Islands on the south shore of Lake Superior in Northern Wisconsin, Madeline Island Ferry Line provides passenger, bicycle and car transportation between the picturesque towns of LaPointe and Bayfield. The 25-minute trip provides spectacular views of the Lake itself and several of the 22 Apostle Islands. Feel yourself being carried away!
Begin your voyage to the Island by stopping in the Madeline Island Information Station across from the ferry landing in Bayfield. It is a treasure trove of visitor information, promoting Island attractions and businesses. The displays in the Information Station highlight Island artistry, museums, lodging, parks, restaurants, and shops. A visit here will prepare you for all there is to see and do while you're on the Island, and get you set for the ferry trip!
